With his version of Blind, starring Nayanthara in the lead, Milind Rau has chosen safe and easy choices.

Blind, a Korean thriller directed by Ahn Sang-Hoon, isn’t especially good, based on the precedent set by Korean thrillers over the years. What truly works in its favour is that it’s a thriller with a female lead, which is what makes it a little different. Naturally, that’s what makes Netrikann, the Tamil version of Blind, so refreshing, especially when it stars Nayanthara. It’s a film that’s all on her shoulders, and she doesn’t let us down.

As the film opens, Durga (Nayanthara as a CBI officer) walks into a pub and drags her brother (Aadhi) out. She cuffs him and drives him home in the passenger seat of her car. An altercation along the way results in an accident in which Aadhi is murdered and Durga loses her vision. Durga must battle a serial killer with only her brains at her disposal as she struggles to live with the guilt of her brother’s death and come to terms with her disability, before he preys on more young ladies.

To a great extent, Netrikann works because it’s a safe replica of the original content, with very few new components added to suit local sensibilities. For a film starring Nayanthara, who is unquestionably one of the country’s biggest female stars, additional thrills were required to keep the audience glued till the very end. To make the fight with Nayanthara more enjoyable, it needed a more powerful enemy. As the serial killer, Ajmal, is a little unimpressive, and his presence is barely enough to give you goosebumps. Thankfully, Nayanthara pulls it off with a powerful performance, one of her best.

The film is drawn out, with an unnecessary backstory to justify the villain’s actions. There’s a subplot regarding women and premarital pregnancy that needs to be addressed. Manikandan, who plays a supporting role, is given a substantial role and makes the most of it. The rest of the cast, on the other hand, has very little to offer. Overall, Netrikann is one of those safe remakes that succeeds because it doesn’t try to change the original’s soul too much.
